Kumazemi - Art as a meeting place

Kweikersdag

On 10 October 2020, the Kweikersparade travelled through Tienen with the theme 'Transformation'. Due to the postponement of the big annual parade to 2021 because of Corona, they went out with a mini parade with the local giants. In art studios, violinist Aline Accoe worked with the participants of her project towards a performance, the creation of a kweikerslied. For this she worked together with a percussion group of Erm'in Erm and costume designers.

People from four vulnerable target groups were invited to participate in these artistic workshops. That was precisely the strength of the project, the diversity of these participants who were involved through the partner organisations. Women with an immigration background, people living in poverty, people with a mental disability and the participants of the KNEPHatelier sang together and worked with cardboard. This created bridges between the different inhabitants of Tienen. The theme of transformation is fuel for dialogue. This was not only an artistic project, but also created loyal friendships as well as an enhanced sense of well-being among the participants.

'Thanks to the support of Arts in Society Award I was taken more seriously as an artist with my project. My share became more valuable, I was no longer an intern on the side, but was able to contribute fully to the whole. I was given more space as an artist to do my thing and enrich my practice through collaborations. The coaching provided by AISA in addition to the financial support provided a link with the other laureates, we were able to share our passion and find like-minded people during the laureate meetings, which gave us a push to go further and further. It is nice to hear that you are not alone with your challenges and stumbling blocks, especially during this Corona year. That was a great challenge, I am a perfectionist and found it difficult to deviate from the planned plan. It took more time and energy to replan and prepare the project. Nevertheless, in the end something very beautiful and even more beautiful than expected came out because when you could bring people together the connection was even stronger. The physical coming together got a different meaning, making music together got a different level or layer.'
